Best Tip
The best ways of cleaning a shower drain is by using a pipe unblocker or Domestos. These are the best commercial drain cleaners that I highly recommend. Always remember to read instructions carefully when using commercial cleaners for better results.
Your safety should also be your number one priority.
Tools you will require
When unblocking your shower drain. You will need;
A Drainer
Commercial drainers such as Domestos will work wonders on your drain. Remember to read the instructions carefully.
A Crochet Hook
This will be used to remove small blockages such as hair
Baking Soda and White Vinegar
The beauty of Baking soda and vinegar is that once they react, they ignite a chemical chain reaction that is fizzy. This reaction is cable of breaking down grease and oils.
If you find that your shower drains slowly, it is because it either has soap or hair blocking it. Before you get a plumber to work on your shower drain try out these steps below that are cost effective.
Clearing your Blocked Shower Using a Commercial Cleaner
Though there are plenty of commercial cleaners I will recommend Domestos for your shower drain. This is because you will require very little effort when unblocking your shower drain. When using it, ensure the room is well ventilated and you have protective clothing like gloves.
For maximum results, ensure you read instructions on the back of the package.
Clearing a Blocked Shower Drain Mechanically
The best tools to use include the crochet hook and thin wire coat hanger. Another tool that you can consider is the drain snake.
When using the mechanical tool follow the following procedures:
Create a hook using the hanger so that you can be able to insert it in the drain
Ensure you have a container for the debris you collect.
Wear gloves if you deem it necessary
Remove the shower drain cover
Insert the hooked wire inside the drain as you twist it.
Continually tug it in an upwards motion until you are satisfied there is no more hair inside
To ensure maximum results are obtained, drain the block with bicarbonate and white vinegar.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
For this, you will need boiling water, bicarbonate soda and distilled white vinegar.
Pour baking soda in your blocked drain
Follow immediately with white vinegar
Use the rag to plug a drain
Let the fizzy effect take place for 20 minutes
Pour boiling water in the drain to clear the blockage
Repeat The Process If Necessary
TIP:
For maximum results, a ratio of 1:1 is to be used of bicarbonate and white vinegar
Wearing protective clothing like goggles and rubber gloves will protect your skin in case of any spillage.
Biocides Should Always be Used Safely
Always read the manufactures message on the label as well as know the expiry date of your product.
The above suggestions will ensure that your shower is not only clog free but odour free.
